CECS Tutoring Quality Program

Posted by csrins on March 19, 2009

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) Tutoring Quality Program  (TQP) organized its first discussion forum for Semester 1 2009 today.

Paul Preston from the Academic Skills and Learning Centre led a discussion forum on the role of tutors in effectively supporting and guiding student objectives of learning and understanding.

The Tutoring Quality Program is a Community of Practice (CoP) for tutors and demonstrators in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the Australian National University.

Tutors provide essential support and scaffolding for effective teaching and learning practice in the university context. The TQP provides a necessary and much-required forum for the development of best practices in teaching and learning.

Several interesting ideas emerged from the discussion which will definitely result in better-informed and capable tutoring practice.

SIDECARS: Support for Early Career Academics

Posted by csrins on July 22, 2008

SIDECARS stands for Support, Inspiration, & Development for Early Career Academics and Research Students.

The purpose of SIDECARS is to assist early career academics and research students who are course coordinators and lecturers at the Australian National University. Research Students who are asked to run a complete undergraduate course are often isolated, under-resourced, and under-prepared for the task they face. Newly appointed academics often find themselves in a similar position. SIDECARS helps to reduce that isolation, and provide much-needed resources and preparation, assisting participants in the transition from student to academic.

Activities in the project this year include: a recruitment drive focusing on research students/early career academics from across the university who are involved in course delivery. The drive will also encourage early career academics/research students who are involved in course delivery to be more active in feeding their skills/experience into the existing ANU teaching and learning framework.

We will also prepare, disseminate and collate a University-wide survey on the current situation, the well being and the ongoing teaching related needs of early career academics and research students involved in course delivery at the ANU and prepare a report on University-wide findings and implications of the survey. The report will be presented to the wider ANU community for discussion at an ANU Teaching Forum event. The presentation of the report would also form a second promotional event for the SIDECARS community.
