The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) Tutoring Quality Program (TQP) organized its first discussion forum for Semester 1 2009 today.
Paul Preston from the Academic Skills and Learning Centre led a discussion forum on the role of tutors in effectively supporting and guiding student objectives of learning and understanding.
The Tutoring Quality Program is a Community of Practice (CoP) for tutors and demonstrators in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the Australian National University.
Tutors provide essential support and scaffolding for effective teaching and learning practice in the university context. The TQP provides a necessary and much-required forum for the development of best practices in teaching and learning.
Several interesting ideas emerged from the discussion which will definitely result in better-informed and capable tutoring practice.

The ANU College of Medicine and Health Sciences and the the ANU Integration Network are organizing a short course of graduate Students on 8 and 9 September 2008.
Introduction to Research Integration for Knowledge and Action is a short one-day course introducing graduate students to integration studies and its role in their research.
An interesting part of the course is the opening dinner on 8 September 2008. The dinner is a pre-requisite for the course and is aimed to introduce the participants and course leaders.
But it is not all fun and games for graduate students. 9 September promises to be a marathon session of enlightenment from 09:00 to 16:00!
This should be an interesting course to attend, particularly so since my work focuses on informing dialog in decisions.

A Teaching Interest Group is a group of people who meet regularly and discuss and interact about a common interest in teaching. There are numerous teaching interest groups at the Australian National University — consisting of coursework students, research students, staff and a healthy mix of all of the same. A few teaching groups are specific to Colleges and Schools, while others are multi-disciplinary in focus. There is no pre-set mandate or agenda for the teaching groups. The direction of the group is determined by the members and participants.
